It is ironic, given the Pope is no more than esteemed figurehead to most Catholics.

Tons of people, especially Muslims, care about religion. Only in the West have people really lost their religious roots. The Vatican still has a nominal amount of influence though. I think if the Papacy was more active it might be able to actually do stuff. But oh well, I guess that's why I'm not a Cardinal.

Im talking about the UK. i believe only 2 million people go to church every sunday of a population of 60 million. The point i was trying to make was that British socity would never suddenly start following Shari'a law were not religous people anymore.
Also its one thing to say you believe in god and another to belong to a religion.

That is the definition of being religious. Following a recognized religion is another thing, but if you believe in a certain deity, then what you know is effected by the practiced teachings and traditions that surround said deity. It's like saying you believe in Allah, but are not Muslim.

I'm pretty sure it's a common thing to say something like "I'm Catholic, but I'm not very religious so I don't go to Church often."

You do know that Allah is simply the Arabic word for God, right? If you're a Christian, you can still say "I love Allah" and it makes sense.

Arab speaking Christians also call God Allah, although some muslims don't seem to appreciate that...

On my birth certificate it states i am Christian, i recently had to choose on a job application if i was Catholic or Protestant, i chose Protestant to avoid argument. I do not believe in God or go to church many British people are the same. Why would a socity that is loosing their faith suddenly start enforcing Shari'a law?

It makes about as much sense as saying that "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual."

It's a marker for self-identity, but it is useless in a formal setting, and most of the time it makes you look like the kind of douche who hangs out at OWS.

So how should one identify that they believe in a religion, but are very lax in following religious customs like prayer ceremonies and dietary restrictions?

A small group of Islamic nutjobs decare Sharia law in an English town, this is almost worse then the New Black Panther Party of 3 people. I can decare myself Emporer of the Midwest, get a couple dozen people to say I am but that does not legally make me Emporer of the Midwest.

Agnostic Theist would seem the most sensible idea. That or you could actually think about it and realise the only real reason you nominally believe in God is because that was the social environment you were raised in. Hence taking the far more rational position of Agnostic Athiest and enjoying a new understanding of the world around you while frollicing in a metaphorical field of daffodils with the flower nymphs...
