Can't go wrong with Ghost in the Shell. Personally I recommend Samurai Champloo.

Yeah, I found the philosophy to be interesting, and perhaps utter bullshit, but very good bullshit... I believed it :D The idea of a stand alone complex is quite interesting more applicable as the internet allows anonymity spreads... in fact the hacker group anonymous, appears to even be a stand alone complex!

My favorite animes are Samurai Champloo, K-On, Lucky Star, Cowboy Bebop and Death Note.

Cowboy Bebop ending was super rushed (the 'Lost' of Anime)

One of the only memorable scenes from Samurai Champloo was the Samurai rap that I flipped on the telly and immediately yelled WTF? pretty hilarious... I haven't seen death note in order so it is quite confusing to me, but that one chick is drawn really well yup the one who eventually becomes... THE ONE!

Legend of Galactic Heroes is very good, but also very old.
