The Globe and Mail has this cool thing on their website that let's you play finance minister. Can you balance the books and the way you want? I managed to get a 5.2 billion surplus doing things my way for the most part, I would personally raise corporate tax and the tax on wealthy a lot more. Link here.

You people seem to be forgetting that it isn't that the government doesn't know how to balance the budget, it's that they can't agree on whether they should cut spending or raise taxes.

So it's easy if one person is making decisions, but harder in a democracy where you have to make people who disagree agree.

Which is why things like this are stupid.

6 billion surplus, without getting rid of any social/benefit programs, and only minor cuts to the government. If this game gave me an option to go full socialist, I could make Canada a superpower.

That being said, Canada has a pussy debt compared to the US.

Hmm... With only a limited understanding of what most of these items are I got it down to a 9.9 billion deficit. I have a feeling some items are misrepresented, at least fiscally though.

Damn, it's not as easy as you guys make it sound. I managed to cut 5 billion from the defecit, but it was too painful to cut anything else.
Although it's still a hell of a lot easier than it would be in America or Britain. I know here we've had a 20% cut in pretty much every government department.

Why couldn't they have an option to just abolish the Canadian army all together? That way I could save allot more money.

I don't know much about Canadian tax rates, but according to Wikipedia, federal tax rates are as follows:

So what I'd do is bump the 29% up to over 50% to start with. I'd cut defence spending and instead focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by investing in green technologies with perhaps a public sector company.

4.4 Billion Surplus. Didn't cut retirement, infastructure, or civil benefits. Increased GST to Harper levels and snipped government salaries. Increased marginal taxes by 1 percent but atleast you have a clean, efficient, and hopefully happy Canada.

The Tories and Conservatives would however, cry for my head on a silver platter.
