    Don't underestimate the French navy. Apparently, they have only one carrier. However, that one carrier has anti-air missle capabilities with 3x the range of the U.S.'s best carriers.

    @ Stalin: YAY!!!

    Aircraft carrier fleet is also on par with the UK, Brazil, Thailand, Russia and India and only have one less than Italy and Spain. America has 11 because it has to.

    They need those to make sure random fleets don't land on random islands from across the globe without stopping to refuel at a base.

    Wow, your ~75 years late China, fucking Thailand beat you to it. Congrats.

    Also, America only has like 11-12 carriers? That's disappointing.

    well China is falling into the trap of really expensive military hardware. It's already getting outdated stealth fighters, using spaceship tech America had in the '60's. What else could it do we did 50 years ago?

    Uh, yay? I guess? I don't really care.
    The fact that this is news makes me think that there's another cold war brewing, but then again I'm pretty unknowledgeable in politics.

    Ya, but you'd think one of the largest and "greatest" countries in the World wouldn't be comparing their Navy to France though.
    In other words, it's more that China's Navy sucks as much as everyone elses than China's Navy is as good as everyone elses.

    @ Kara
    Not modern. Its basically an old Russian Cold War Era carrier that China purchased and renovated. Its not meant for combat I dont think. Its going to probably be used for training for the future carriers that they are planning to build. Oh and Taiwan's carrier was basically built in the U.S. The training, ship, hardware, etc. And remember when judging the actions and progress of nations to be sure that you understand their priorities. China has no interest in policing the globe so carriers are basically useless to them. In this case, I doubt that they will produce more then the U.S. Militarily, they are a great burden as they will require large escorts. Economically, they are a bitch [pardon my french] to maintain. This carrier and its successors will largely be used for a short spear defence and in their lifetimes probably never see open ocean beyond Japan. China and its people simply dont have the desire to go beyond the boundries that they already hold. And yes, in comparison to the U.S.'s Navy China's new carrier doesnt accomplish much. To be quite honest, China's Navy along with all the other navies of the world are jokes [the U.S. excluded of course]. However, this shows that China's Navy is growing and that is more than [is it than or then in this context?] any other besides the U.S.'s.

    @ Unholyknight
    Yes, this is China's first.

    @Otter
    Unfortunately, this is a neccessity in maintaining a competant military. A great power cannot afford to NOT modernize their military to a certain extent. I believe that during Regan's time he claimed that the U.S. had a missle defense program that could shoot down I.C.B.M.s. He was lying. China can do that now. It also has anti-carrier missles that are actually not too shoddy. Though to be honest, they are counted as mini-I.C.B.M.s and firing them will likely trigger a global nuclear war as on everyone's sensors they will register as I.C.B.M.s :lol: .

    @3man75
    Like I pointed out to Kara, China will likely never be involved on the global stage in the same capacity as the U.S. The Taliban will likely never have a good reason to attack. In any case, if they do, China is not so soft and forgiving as the U.S. As opposed to the U.S. policy, China will sweep over the Taliban lands and kill EVERYTHING. No hidy-hole will be safe. Even the innocent civilians will suffer. In Cambodia, there was a story of a general who cleared out a town of people while looking for enemies [literal meaning, I dont think anybody was actually killed in the forced eviction]. He let the people back in one at a time, after searching both them and the city top to bottom. If China ever feels generous, this is what they would probably do.

    You're underestimating France.

    Despite proven facts, their military never was that bad.

    It's always held out to be among the strongest in the world, for about 500 years now.

    If I'm not mistaken, they're ranked third right now.
