Kim Dotcom, founder of Megaupload is claiming that the shutdown of Megaupload was instigated by none other than U.S. Vice President Joe Biden who took such action as a favor to his close associate and MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) boss Chris Dodd:

Also, if you have some time check out this documentary, It'll be relevant if this thread spiral's into a debate about copyright (interesting side note: this doco itself was actually taken off youtube for a while and then reinstated due to copyright law).

Does he have any proof besides suspicion and circumstantial evidence that Biden and Dodd happened to be in the same place at the same time?

If Megaupload was doing something illegal, then the fact that it was shut down is independent of whether this allegation is true. That is to say, even if this allegation is true, it doesn't change whether Megaupload was allowing illicit conduct on their site. Thus, that Megaupload was shut down was an inevitability, regardless of where the order to investigate came from and under what circumstances.

This is bullshit since the Vice President has no power and in 2015 no one will remember his name.

I don't know why this guy is attacking Biden, Biden steps in shit all the time he doesn't need some third party to pile it on.

I'm getting the inclination here that we all generally agree that the shutting down of Mega Upload was unwarranted.

Ah, I was getting confused as I thought you were referring to the allegation that Kim Dotcom was making about Joe Biden.

It's important to note that Megaupload was one of the more compliant file sharing websites when it came to working with the MPAA and other such organisations to remove copyrighted material from their website. Infact, they had allowed the MPAA and its partners direct delete access to Megaupload servers to remove links to copyrighted material on their website before the whole site was taken down. But even if Megaupload didn't do everything in their power to end illicit conduct on their site, would it follow from your argument that websites like Youtube, Google Search engine and pretty much any service that aids or allows illicit conduct in the form of copyright violations will also inevitably be shut down?

Furthermore, I think it's important to discuss the term 'illicit' and whether the sharing of copyrighted materials should even be considered illegal. Clearly, the shutting down of Megaupload is more about cutting out the direct threat to the MPAA's monopoly power over cultural capital then protecting the integrity of the stuggling 'poor' artist.
