if you don't have the economy to back it up youre fucked
It doesnt matter if you could still destroy anybody you are a superpower. Do you think that any major power could defeat America in a conventional war?

Quote from your wikepedia article, "A superpower is a state with a dominant position in the international system which has the ability to influence events and its own interests and project power on a worldwide scale to protect those interests"

Thar is the definition of America if you ask me

And? That essentially backs up what I said. No other nation, other than China and perhaps Russia, though probably not, I guess, could possibly project there power all around the globe.

But can USA? What I'm saying is that there is no superpower at this day and age. If you are most powerful country that does not make you a superpower, unless you qualify for it.

The most powerful country would be a superpower. America fits that quote which is apparently according to wikipedia, the definition of a superpower

unless you qualify for it say the only difference between number 1 and number 2 is a single tank. Would number one be a superpower?

I believe they could, but they seem to be more cautious of doing so. I also saw in the news that America played a part in the overthrowing of Mubarak in Egypt, by putting pressure on them. And then they had blatent underlying reasons for the invasion of Iraq, and to a certain extent involving themselves in Libya. Then they have military bases all over the world that gives them the ability to be involved in any conflict on the planet. Economically it is now more difficult, but if they have the ability to influence the EU then that to adds to their superpower claim.

what wikipedia defines as a superpower is the definition of America basically

unless you qualify for it say the only difference between number 1 and number 2 is a single tank. Would number one be a superpower?
Influence EU & is involved in Libya? On rest I do agree. In my opinion all USA lacks to be a "superpower" is hegemony. (And no, NATO does not = USA)

    Also:

"Experts argue that this older assessment of global politics was too simplified, in part because of the difficulty in classifying the European Union at its current stage of development. Others argue that the notion of a superpower is outdated, considering complex global economic interdependencies, and propose that the world is multipolar."

the notion of a superpower is not that old so how could it be outdated? Global economics were important in the late 40's and 50's when the notion of a superpower was used

But who leads the process of globalization? America, the second they fuck up then the world fucks up. If the rest of the world depends on them then surely that makes them a superpower. That is before the recession however, now countries in Europe are coming out the recession when I believe America is still in it. That detracts from there power without a doubt. Perhaps in this century there shall be a new power on which the world generally relies on, I remember reading that China should surpass them economically by 2115 but that it is probably going to be somethime in the first 3 quarters of this century. Personally, I believe that this next century shall be the most turbulent time in history and that means that America definately won't last.

Yeah but for the moment we are a superpower. I agree with you though, if we don't turn things around we won't be a superpower for much longer.

But what if China fucks up? Wast majority of goods comes from there. Also there is a question of if EU can be defined as some sort of power. Its kinda like United States, only a litle different (language, culture etc.) If EU would be considered as "power" it would be the superpower. But thats whole other issue.

Perhaps if the countries allowed it to centralize more, but I can't see that happening if some haven't even adopted the Euro.

You can travel freely etc. But yeah we lack unified military & foreign policy (although we tend to agree on all, its still not on paper)

In the end of the day all I'm saying is that USA lacks Hegemony that it had during cold war and there fore is no superpower anymore.

Well, I think that the US didn't lose that power, but lacks the ability to use that power. This is probably due to the end of the Cold War: US citizens don't want to do that anymore.

We are not in a multipolarity (and thank God). We've proven that time and again by roflstomping requests from other NATO members to avoid conflict. Economic interdependence has only strengthened US hegemony; a recession here will hit everyone hard. If the US economy were to collapse today, the world economy would collapse right along with it. I think you're confusing superpower status with hyperpower status. In the Cold War both the US and the USSR were superpowers. We certainly haven't gotten weaker since the end of the Cold War; our influence on global politics is more pronounced than ever. Guaranteed we're a superpower for another century, though it remains to be seen if any other actors emerge (looking at you, Russia).
