So basically in school right now I'm doing a project/presentation on what I think the shittiest dystopia would be. It's all very subjective and a matter of opinion really but I'm curious what YOU think the crappiest kind of civilization to live in would be. The least function, or the one that functions too much? GOOGOGOGOG
A utopia, no way to better yourself nothing to live for but pleasure, its like living in Seattle. Highest suicide rate in the USA.
Communism. Any government that includes "People's" in its name. Any government that includes "Worker's" in its name. Any government that includes "Socialist" in its name. Any government that claims to propagate "revolution." Any government that claims its opponents are "counterrevolutionaries." Any government that supports a cult of personality. Any country that has the implements of manual labor in its flag. Any country that has a "national ideology." Any country that has one party. Any country that jails or executes political dissidents. Any society that values security over liberty. Any society that values comfort over meaning. Any society that values political correctness over free speech.
A Theocracy. Specifically a Theocracy with heavy elements of fascism mixed in and ruled by an insane dictator. Maybe that last part goes without saying.
For me, that last part is the only bad thing. You want a dystopia? I'd say anything that involves slave labour. Nothing wrong with some hard labour, but for me the image that immediately sticks out in my mind when someone says 'dystopia' isn't a fascist dictator or a police state, but a particularly miserable mine/factory worker. Oh, and any world occupied by Games Workshop's Chaos-types. Imagine a sort of satanist theocracy. Not fun.
except the work conditions, the lack of adequate housing or food , perhaps the total lack of freedom? That is a ridiculous idea you have there pope.
Just look up the Imperium of Man from the Warhammer 40000 series. It's a theocratic fascist dictatorship that is run by bureaucrats that are either incompetent or corrupt or both. Plus they're backed by many legitimate authority with the help of super soldiers, assassins, large masses of soldiers, heavy weaponry capable of planetary annihilation. They're also run by people who are Xenophobic, although with good reason, fanatical when it comes to an Emperor with massive psychic abilities and will literally slaughter people for merely disagreeing with the idea the emperor is divine. This is also pretty screwed up considering the Imperium is one of the few that could be considered "good" or at the very least not complete monsters.
To be fair, almost any dystopia must have some 'good' in it. I mean, if we don't live in a utopia now, it must be a dystopia, right?
That was my point in class. There is no absolute bad in the universe. I've never been in a situation where 100% of my existence was suffering and I doubt anyone has without being dead in the next few moments.
No a dystopia is a state of repression where people are dehumanized and lead fearful lives. Not many places are in such states. I also tend to avoid extremes for the very reason of something not always being one thing or another. There's middle ground.
Inform your teacher that a state of dystopia is as unlikely as a state of utopia. Then tell him to stop being a pessimistic cunt. The actual definition of dystopia is something along the lines of a state of repression operating under the guise of utopia.
