    Who's your favorite English king?

I personally seem to like all the villains in history so my favorite is Edward Longshanks because I personally find him to be a bad ass.

King Arthur is personally my favorite king out of all kings. Led the defense against the Saxons when they were invading.

Richard the Lionheart. The only merciful and respectable crusader. Even Saladin said that he would rather have him as a friend rather than a enemy.

Define 'respectable'. A king who hasn't ever even set foot on the soil of his country, but bleeds the whole country dry with taxes just to fight a rather unjustified war is in my opinion nowhere near respectable. His brother (the famous bad guy from Robin Hood) had to tax the people even more to ransom him out from captivity, which Richard repayed by burdening the English people even more in order for him to spend the last of his days in a nice castle in France. Richard the Lionheart brought England to the verge of collapse and bankruptcy, for his personal glory and fame.

The case of an unjustified war is nothing but bullshit, if that were so, you would have to blame Frederick Barbarossa and the King of France for answering the call to arms from the Pope (you know, god's representative).

Also Richard wasn't always merciful, he executed an entire egyptian garrison who were all POW's, which made Saladin mad, very mad.

My favourite would have to be Henry V.

My knowledge of English monarchs is limited almost exclusively to their forays into my homelands, and Richard was by far the most honorable and respectable crusader of the lot. He showed mercy at Acre and fought tooth and nail for what he believed in without needless slaughter (most of the time).

Wait Matt, so which one was the crusader that burned Jerusalem and killed the Jews? I thought he was British. Or was he French?

@ Yuri: You're fucking dumb, the crusades were bullshit.

Well, it was sort of a group effort when they tried to cleanse the city of Muslims and Jews, but it Raymond is often considered the most responsible with Godfrey also carrying a lot of the blame.

While I don't blame them for going with tide and not wanting to resist the Pope, I would say that all the Crusades were totally unjustified. Saying they weren't is just stupid unless you think it's OK to just go and try to systematically slaughter and remove Muslims and Jews from the Holy Land.

Henry VII; like many great rulers he ascended to the throne rather than being born into it. He pursued peace with his rivals and under his reign, England prospered and became exceedingly rich, which allowed his son Henry VIII to squander it all on self-glorifying projects.
