No, he was a fat, narcissistic, misogynistic pillock who put the entire country under threat of invasion just so he could get his end away with Anne Boleyn. The second-worst of the Tudor monarchs after Mary, but she was a genocidal religious zealot, so that's not saying much.

I love you. I love Henry VIII for his absurdity. They also made an awesome TV series after him, even if it is grossly inaccurate to history, I think they nailed his attitude.

But no he certainly wasn't a good king

You're Irish, making you automatically biased against English nobility.

You have to remember that Jerusalem had a lot of christians in it as well, but when it got conquered by a caliphate I don't remember now, they simply slaughtered the christians and prohibited the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Byzantium asked for help against the Turks and the Pope saw in this a chance to free the city for the christians, so yeah they were justified, but after the 3rd one it just became pointless I agree because Richard and Saladin agreed that Jerusalem would be a free city for pilgrims.

No, he never did that. Neither the Caliphate or Saladin slaughtered Christians in the city. As for the pilgrims. Christian pilgrims were harassed and taxed, but they were always welcome, both before and after the Third Crusade. And it wasn't Saladin, it was bandits. He simply did nothing to regulate them, mainly because he was busy trying to unite Islam and Judaism to fight the Crusaders. That was on the top of the priority list for a while, so I don't blame him.

My knowledge on the crusades is limited, but didn't the Jews side with the Muslims? And even the Eastern Orthodox Christians of the Byzantine Empire, whom the Catholics were supposed to be helping, were subject to crusader pillage and slaughter, right? Yeah that sounds pretty justified to me.

The Seljuks were responsible for the killing of Christians and 'locking down' the holy places for them. But the Seljuks were not Saladin's people. Saladin was Egyptian, the Seljuks were Turks. It's just that to Christians all muslims were the same (this goes for both sides, al crusaders were called 'Franks' by muslims). And Jews didn't play a major role, since jews were expelled from the holy land during the Roman era, and they didn't return until the 20th century. There was no bigger presence of jewish people there than there was in any major European city.

Well you see the Byzantines asked for help from the pope which started the first crusade. They remained allied to the crusader states for quite awhile. Then the Venetians lead the 4th crusade, and their soldiers were not getting paid and there was a delay while they were supposed to be moving through Byzantine lands (something like that), and they decided. "Hey guys instead of killing the people we are supposed to kill, lets sack the richest city in the world". When the pope got word of the fact that they were thinking of sacking Cosntantinople, he sent a warning message to the leaders of the crusade that he would excommunicate the crusaders if they went through with it. The leaders kept the message away from the soldiers. They sacked Constantinople and were excommunicated. Then when all the gold started flowing into Rome from the sacking of Constantinople he withdrew that excommunication.
