I meant instinct as a positive thing when people care and look out for eachother. Thousands of years ago, it was needed to survive. Now, it makes for decent human beings. Of course, instinct has a negative side as well.
Jesus didn't actually want his disciples to hate their family, but that they need to be willing to turn their backs on their past if they're going to follow him. As they will be, in the future, be hated, beaten, tortured, and killed (All the 12 apostles were killed, except for John, who was exiled to the Island of Patmos). It was a figure of speech. Jesus often massively exagerrated to make a point.
I went to a Protestant school. We based absolutely everything around the orange and even the walls were coated with Protestant dogma. I hated it. We were force-fed bible stories every day. Religion class completely revolved around Protestantism, we were made to pray for 10 minutes every day. Looking back on it, it hasn't led me to hate the idea of a God. Instead, it made me hate organized religion. I hated the church. I hated the Protestants. I still hold resentment for the orange today. As for the bible stories, you can interpret them in any way you like.
