Yes, yes Frederick Barbarossa was died by drowning and had rather bad luck but lets get back on topic and focus on why he was the greatest general of all time, i do not believe he was tough i do believe he was the greatest general of the crusades.

For me the best general will always be Genghis khan tough there is alot of underestimated generals that will never get credit.

I believe he drowned when crossing a river not swimming. He had a Heartattack or something like that I believe and fell off his horse and died. Sad that he did. He was my ancestor :(
he didn't fall of his horse, imagine the scenario where you're fighting in the desert with constant raids to your supplies, almost no water, when you find a river you'll jump in it, however he had a 80 kg armour, which maybe because he was tired from the trek, was to weak to swim with it and drowned, unfortunately, he had the biggest crusader army coming to Jerusalem, not even Saladin would have defeated him, because of the size of his army and his generalship abilities.
He did fall off his horse I believe. My sources are this one book which I found at the library another source says that either one is correct. http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/arm ... arossa.htm
He is a great general but not the greatest of all time for me it was Hannibal.

    Eh, Not really[/quote:22pe1g63]

You do know he one of the few generals to ever use Hannibal strategics correctly, pretty much never lost a battle, and lead Russia to victory in pretty much everything.

Pyrhus of Epirus is a good one. Also, Antigonus the one eyed. Boudicca is also an interesting one as well as Mithridates.

Pyrhus? The guy who sucked at winning so bad that they made a new word to describe it? Okay...

He was a good commander in his own right. Are you forgetting that Pyrhus was feared in AGreece so much that his rivals gave him soldiers, weapons and elephants for his campaign in italy just to keep him out of Greece.

Yeah? And how'd that campaign work out for him? When even your enemies are giving you soldiers and equipment and you still suck hard, something is wrong.
And it probably wasn't the Italians.

Pyrhus was described by Hannibal and Scipio to be one of the best generals to every live, tough he did "win" so bad he got the term Pyrrhic victory named after him.

yes I know, but I want you to give me reasons as to why you think this way, he's way better than Alexander and other generals, all he didn't have was support from any other (powerfull) countries, he basically had to rely on his Grand Armée and he turned France from a country in disorder and chaos, into a massive and organised war machine that could stand up to even Russia, which was known as an unbeatable country, I know he they didn't surrender, but had to destroy their country to survive.

Napoleon is just amazing, i wish to have granted him the kingship of France and had his line rule for all time. Napoleon has to be it the top 3 for best general ( and of course he was Italian hahahahah)

I wonder how history would go if Corsica was never sold to the Republic.
