I didn't say they didn't love him. They loved him, because of it actually (like you mention, sort of, I think).
But you can't deny that he had a bit of an ego and a disregard for anything none physical.

My grandfather met him once in a field hospital, he was a nice man, complemented him on his good job and left the tent with a Purple Heart in my grandfather's hand. He said Patton was the most aggressive and courageous man he's ever seen.

Not referring to the Purple Heart cuz' everyone got pretty much got one, but the fact that he met him was awesome tho[/quote]

My Grandfather met Patton once too. He was in the 90th infantry division in the 3rd army. My grandfather loved Patton and said he was one of the greatest Generals of all time. Also he won a Purple Heart too after being wounded by a hand Grenade.

I had 3 who fought in the war, a Tank gunner (M4(76) Sherman), infantryman (I forgot the division), and a P-51 pilot. None are alive today... :(

Also I should add Admiral Chester Nimitz, he beat 4 Japanese aircraft carriers as well as forcing the retreat of the Japanese fleet from midway with only 3 carriers, largely under-trained and inexperienced men at his disposal as well as inferior aircraft. I also find it quite ironic that our best Generals come from the south :p

I agree with you minus William Sherman. He wasnt even the best Union general. (and the union had pretty crappy generals) and he is basically only known for his march to the sea. And I believe the North Vietnamese general was Ho Chi Minh (spelling?)

I always considered Napoleon Bonaparte, Subutai, Alexander the Great, and Julius Caesar to be the best, but I know their are many more.

And that was a good thing for his side (the Union for any who don't know) and at the time was the only way to win fast.
Also, I am surprised most people don't recognize Yamamoto or Nobunaga to be great...

With 3 carriers, inexperienced forces, and inferior aircraft and equipment vs 4 top of the line Japanese carriers, a feet of Cruisers, destroyers, troop transports, battleships and subs as well as some of the best aircraft at the time? Yes he did :D

Some (for example on the USS Yorktown) had fought in the coral sea and bombed targets in Tokyo in a counterattack for pearl harbor (I think it was the Do-little raid).
