He was planning to replace those men with defections from the Ciscalpine tribes tht you know, hated the Romans who were trying to conquer them (which he did repleniish his ranks with them) as well as a crapton of italian defections.

OOC: I guess you got your internet back? OT: yes but there still would have been more troops.

The most historically accurate representation of the battle yet.

Carthage was doomed from the beginning. Hannibal did everything he could and more, but Rome had him in checkmate the entire time. And no matter how much he wiggled or squirmed his defeat was coming.

what about the Roman armies still roaming around in Northern Italy. Hannibal would never try and beseige a city and leave his army open while there is still a substanial enemy presence in the area.

Don't underestimate Hannibal. He could have started a small siege to lure them out.

Given all the factors against him, Hannibal did an amazing job.

I always wanted to learn more about the general, does anyone have good book recommendations on Hannibal?

Screwed from the beginning? AFter Cannae, the senate narrowly passed a resolution to not seek peace. And I really mean just barely. They were extremely close to suing for peace after Cannae. All Hannibal needed to do was show up in front of ROme and they would have definitely sued for peace.

Then we would be sitting in history class learning the great advancements of Carthage instead of Rome. Hell maybe Hannibal would have gotten ballsy and go on a conquer spree. A Greek invasion is in order! Or some shit....

He never wanted to destroy Rome. Just to get revenge. The Romans were the only ones who seeked total domination of their opponents, and were the only extremely stubborn nations when it came to offering a peace at the time. And I am glad ROme won in a way because Carthage want too keen on granting citiizenship to even the Libyans...
