Hey GoC before you post again watch that video posted. If you have an argument that's not addressed there I'll be entirely surprised.

Yeah man there's more in common with a religion if you're a sports fan then if you're an Atheist. You idolize people and have rituals.

Dogma is a set of beliefs or principles that are held to be incontrovertably true. I'd say it was more redundancy than misuse.

I understood what you meant, but the misuse of that word is just one of my pet peeves.

I know, but I don't think I misused it, i'll admit the grammar was redundant as I used it and "faith" in the same phrase when the two words are somewhat similar. What definition do you give it?

While many religions call their beliefs dogma, the actual definition is a set of beliefs that are incontrovertibly true.

Ah I see what your getting at. Though if I'm right that means nothing is dogma, as nothing can be completely proven.

You're missing the point. Dogma is for morons. What you think is the only reasonable opinion as we can't prove shit.

But from what I gather, by coex's restriction on the use of "dogma" it is an entirely useless word, applicable only in a very limited philosophical sense.

I had always used dogma more generally to explain a set of principles that adherents believed without evidence to be absolutely true: which gives the word a wider useability.

No, more like everything is dogma. As I see it, every belief system, opinion, or movement holds that some aspect of their cause or idea that is true no matter what.

I just pick the course of action I feel is most likely to be correct based on my experience in life and what I want to do and then do it. Crazy thoughts I know, it's almost like people can act without ideological backing .

But most people make decisions based on some sort of criteria that they believe to be true.

I would disagree. I think most people make decisions based on what they want or what they are afraid of. Outside of a philosophical debate I don't think abstract notions of truth mean anything to humans just living our lives.
