I was thinking: Why do humans have monogamy? To me, it sounds foolish, because it completely vaporizes evolution, and the human race will never progress anymore. On the other hand, it has some cultural bonuses. Why do you guys think we have monogamy? And what is the influence it has on politics, philosophy, biology, culture and religion, or what effects do those things have on monogamy itself? Are you for, or against monogamy?

Well, it has influenced politics of former great nations when they still had royalties ruling. Arranged marriages granted powerful allies with other nations or kingdoms. This dates way back into the human history, where we used people as favors and commerce. Also a lonely ruler without a wife can be often seen a weak and lacking support.

Well I'm kinda a hippy. I believe you should only love one person (at a time >.>), but that physical relations with more than one person are pretty cool.

It's probably influenced by the western world's Judeo-Christian heritage.

It draws in people with the myth of 'love' to prevent them spreading their disgusting genes too widely. Plus those who have children by several different fathers or mothers are generally arseholes.
And outdated and patricarchal or not, i'd say it's the most stable way to raise a family.
Edit: Yes I am exaggerating my views for comic/dramatic effect.

Well, the idea of having love "certified" always seemed weird. I guess I don't mind monogamy when it's not accompanied with terribly rigid or restrictive laws, but I don't care for it either. Same for polygamy, if it's not gender restrictive.

Well, humans are some of, if not the, most social animals on Earth. The development of society has been a great part of our evolution. As the human ego grew, society used the idea of monogomy to curb competition and create a state of stability. That's my take.

So you think polygamy is only okay if it's bisexual?

I meant if it's not only men or only women that can have multiple spouses.

Well if you think about it in a survival/animalistic way women would benefit more from polygamy than a man would. If a woman was to choose a mate to impregnate her she would most likely go for the most appealing male i.e. strongest, smartest, most sucessful. This would basically cause the decline in the diversity of genes due to the fact that most women would probally want to be safe and well taken care of rather than take a chance on a "lesser" male.

A woman and her offspring would be able to live much more luxiorously and well off on a 1/10 of a wealthy man's income than she would having a poor man exclusively to herself. That's why I personally believe that monogamy is more of a male oriented idea rather than the silly notion that all women have some fairy tale princess ideal about marriage so they quickl try to convince a male into commitment for life. If any heterosexual male had a choice one woman is much better sounding than none at all.
