Since Jack Layton sadly died in August the NDP have to elect a new leader. Currently there are nine people running and you find out about them here. They will be having a debate on Sunday. I personally support Brian Topp. For those who don't know what the NDP is it's our social democratic party and official opposition in parliament. Even though this is a Canadian issue I would like to know the American opinions aswell.

Tom Mulcair for life. His beard is even more sexy in real life.

His beard inspires a generation, its so beautiful.

But it saddens me to think of how little i really know about Canadian politics, but that's the situation i'm in where i don't have to pay attention to things going on in Canada (Which there almost never reported down here) while Canadians because of there location they must focus on both American and Canadian Politicians, which propley leads you to conclude "Americans are fucking stupid"

To sum this up in a English opinion, I would have to say its either out of Brian Topp or Paul Dewar. I'm leaning more to Brian Topp.

I must say though this is a really good sweet of candidates.

Personally I would be happy if Peggy Nash, Tom Muclair, Brian Topp, or Paul Dewar won the race. All of them are really strong candidates. The others don't stand a hope in hell unless there is some miracle so don't even worry about them.

Also the first debate is Sunday which should be really interesting. I am really curious to see how Topp will preform considering that he doesn't have any elected experience so this will be his moment to really show his political metal. I believe he will do fine, we in the NDP have a saying, "Topp isn't from the right or the left part of the NDP party, he's from the winning party of the NDP party."

Muclair I expect to crush in the debates, the man is unbelievably smart. Watching him debate is always a treat.

Dewar could also be an interesting candidate, the debate is bilingual which could hurt him because his french is weak. That being said Dewar is really nice and kind guy, he used to be a teacher and connects with people very well. If he get's elected as leader it will be very difficult for the cons to attack him without looking like assholes.

I don't know that much about Nash, I know she as a lot of support internally. I also know she is a strong woman who has been a very strong finance critic for the NDP. I also think she would be very difficult for the cons to attack.

Brian Topp's main obstacle to winning is the fact no one outside the party knows him so I believe he can win if people start to know who he is.

A debate? I can't wait to watch them eat each other and make them all seem like total asses. Sort of like the Republicans did.

I think Brian Topp will do well, there should be more younger political candidates these days. That of course isn't a reason in choosing him, but I think it can and will bring in new idea's, which will help scrap corporatism.

Canadian government doesn't often escalate to that degree.

I hate you Canadians so much right now.

Members of the party will vote. Any member can vote you don't have to be a high ranking official or anything of that nature. It's a pure one member one vote federal leadership race. Something we haven't seen in a long time.

I doubt that well happen. Certain people will preform better than others, but the NDP more than any other party seeks unanimity among it's caucuses. They also see things much more collectively and put the party gains above their own personal gains.

So it is similar to an American primary. You say you have not seen this in a long time. Does that mean that other parties do not follow the same system?
