The last time Holland was a nation was in the Medieval period, ever since independence was gained from Spain, it has been the Netherlands. Why people confuse it with Holland, and even make it officialy a translation is something I don't get. If someone were to ask me if I'm from Holland, I'd say yes, because I'm born in the province of South Holland, not because I'm Dutch.

And yet Holland can be used in either sense.

Well, I could now start a rant on how the English language is weird, but Dutch is pretty messed up at times as well...

Now you sound like one of those English folks ranting about the UK and Great Britain being different or something.

The United Kingdom is Scotland, England and Wales. Great Britain is Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Not to mention that there is a huge difference between Holland and the Netherlands. Stop being so American.

Holland is interchangeable with the Netherlands. Like many demonyms or country names, it's not exactly logical. But it's a feature of the English language and it's perfectly acceptable. Also, the UK includes N. Ireland. Hence why it's called "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

No it can't. Dutch people use it too, but it's wrong.

You don't want to see the facts, do you? What's your fathers job?

You don't know, because they don't have to make it public.

You don't know, because they don't have to make it public.

How is liberalism Anti-Corporate, and why would they want to be Anti-Corporate?

I have a source stating that Warner was happy to make propaganda for, and by the command of, the USA. However, that source is in Dutch, you are not going to be able to read it.

Indeed, eventually. Not in the first winter. And yes, they were just a few years away from defeating Germany's eastern front. You did distort my words, stating that I said the US messed it all up.

You mean like how they completely aren't interchangeable? They aren't. This shows what Holland is in the Netherlands. And the fact that the term AMERICA! is commonly accepted as a name for the US, doesn't make it a correct name.

At the beginning of the war, people immediately saw that the march to the east was much slower than expected. Hitler expected to reach the capital before the end of the first summer, but reality was that it took them years to actually get there. When the winter kicked in, Hitler saw that it was hopeless. He was still making progress, but he knew that the Soviets would push back sooner or later. And so it happened.

Then, why do you ignore commonly accepted facts?

It wasn't a desperate counter offensive, it was a pretty successful counter offensive, but in small scale, and with some mistakes. It also did quite some damage to the Axis.

Where did the Allies step into? Operation Barbarossa?

My point with both was, the so-called "liberty" you find in the US, is strongly pointed at. It wasn't that it's propaganda. Which it still is, by the way.

Explain that to my teacher, who wasn't let into the States for wearing a fucking t-shirt.

The fact that it's perfectly acceptable, doesn't make it right. It's just not right. It isn't. Stop saying it is. I get your point, but it isn't right.

First, don't double post. Second, as I said, demonyms and names for countries aren't always logical, but that doesn't mean that using them is incorrect. Language approximates and fabricates many things, but the meaning of words is something we can determine absolutely. And in this case, it's acceptable to use Holland to describe either the western portion of the Netherlands, or to describe the country as a whole.

I get your point, but in this case it's just not correct.

Also, sorry for double-posting, but it'd start to get a bit complicated to edit it in.

Besides, what do you want us to do about it anyway? We can't change around names of places because people have the insight of a fish finger.

    A Business Professor.

Of course they don't have to, but you can get the imagine simply by tracking where they're going and what they're doing.
American Liberalism has tons of trends that are anti-corporate in one fashion or another. For instance, environmental and anti-smoking views to name two.
They weren't making propaganda for them. They were making propaganda because they thought it was their "duty" or something. I don't know, nevertheless it wasn't government controlled, and while some people of the government may have asked them to make propaganda, it certainly wasn't an official decry by any means.
    GoogleTranslate will be my friend.

"Hitler was helpless" would imply that he was ready to crack. Not that he was going to be fighting an intense, neck and neck war with the USSR.

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
Some would call overrunning a country's entire industrial base, crippling their military, and putting them into a state where the law was held only through fear a victory. In a few months everything in Russia that mattered was either captured or in the process of being captured (beyond some of the Caucus areas like Baku and the Volga's major cities such as Stalingrad).

The reason why it was slower than expected is because expectations were sooooo high. They simply couldn't move fast enough to meet them. To put it blunt, the reason why the USSR wasn't conquered in a few weeks was because it was so damn big.

You think Hitler thought it was over? Hitler was fighting for everything he had, thinking he could still win, until the Soviets were storming Berlin. If anything, Hitler never lost hope.

And no, it was far from hopeless. If Hitler had focused on Moscow and Leningrad rather than the Caucus he could've won. If fact he could've won in the Caucus if he hadn't been assaulted Stalingrad, or at least been smart enough about it.

No it was a complete failure. Stalin was hoping to push back the entire Axis offensive, instead he just delayed it.

Well as if invading Japan, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, and Western Europe is considered minimal help, lend-lease certainly wasn't something you can discredit. It was actually quite major. Where do you think the USSR was making its guns when it lost its entire manufacturing base?

Well yes, there is a lot of liberty in the US. What's your point?

Your teacher is either a liar or it was for a different reason your not aware of. There is nothing in US law that stops homosexuals from coming into or leaving the country simply because they are homosexuals.

Why don't you change the name of your country to "Dutchland", that will solve the holland problem.

No, then people will either call it Holland, the Netherlands or Dutchland. If anything it makes the problem even bigger.

Well it would be quite obvious that the dutch would come from Dutchland. Holland would refer to Western Dutchland. The Netherlands would then refer to the Benelux region.

It's already quite obvious that the country isn't called Holland, and hasn't been since the Middle Ages. Keep it as it is, and when you mean the country, just avoid any confusing and say The Netherlands.

I don't call it the Netherlands because I use it when I refer to Belgium, Dutchland, and Luxembourg.
