Seriously, the US can't just refuse to pay. Its a matter of economic principle.
Also, even if they don't pay, one of the primary purposes of the investment by the Chinese was to keep the USD afloat so the US could keep buying Chinese goods. The loss of the trillions would be a blow to the Chinese, but in the long run, they probably never expected that the US would pay them back. In the long run, the investment would still be made back in the income of the goods that are traded with the US.
