His argument is they won more battles, but still, the CSA won more battles than the Union, but they still lost the war. It is as the saying goes, "You won the battle, but lost the war."
True, but I guess you could stretch it to saying that Germany did win on the Eastern Front. I mean, their soldiers were still there several years after the war ended; how you can be occupying a country which has defeated you i'm not sure, but that's how absurd it was.
That's not altogether true. They defeated the Russians, who had made peace with them after the Communists and Lenin had seized control from the Tsars. The Russians made peace in 1918, if I remember correctly. Which is funny because if they had just stayed in the war for a few more months, they could have had a share in the spoils.
@Shisno, the American troops don't really matter here, because I assume whoever asked the question was referring to if the Austrians or Germans took Venice in 1915 or 1916, which means they have almost 2 years before the Americans come into the war.
But then how would the Austrians take Italy? They were already trying (and failing) in 1915, 1916, 1917 and 1918. And how would German troops support that with their forces committed on the Western and Eastern Front?
The alternate scenario is that they break through using a bombing campaign and manage to take Venice. The only thing saving Italy was the mountains, Austria was beating them in open terrain, just stagnating whilst trying to get through the Carpathians. (I believe that's the mountain chain up there)
Austrian....air force? What the hell is that? Germany wouldn't contribute planes to fight the Italians. So it was just Austria...and their air force.
Well that was what the guy said, I assume the Austrians had an air force, they WERE a very powerful country back then... Oh yeah my bad. I was thinking of the Romanian campaigns. In any case, the Austrians were still stuck in the Alps.
KaiserReich happens! Sorry I had to do that, but why is this thread still going on we already know the Entente/Allies won the War. The only victory the Central Powers can really claim is over the Russians.
Well, someone brought it back and I decided hell I'll answer that one guys question about an Austrian bombing campaign. And now, now this is a WW1 alternate history thread!!
During the War Germany did supply the Austrians, so if the Germans ever did manage to make enough of them I don't see why not.
