Spartan infantry isn't the high point of greek infantry, and macedon isn't special for their cavalry. Macedonian pikemen armed with the sarissa decimated greek traditionally armed hoplites, and it was the basis of greek warfare for the remainder of their history. Oh, and saying the low point was lack of greek unity is irrelevant. The fact that different states in greece didn't combine their military might means nothing. Thats like saying that the low point of Union army during the American Civil War was that they didn't include the Confederate forces.

That will be the military of the Mongol Empire!!

They are one of the strongest & fearsome during the 13th century!

Their men learn archery & horse riding since they were young, make them brave & skillful as soldiers.

With superior military tactics and organization, the Mongol Empire conquer nearly all of continental Asia, the Middle East and parts of eastern Europe.

I was refering to the Macedonians, more specificly Alexander. If his empire remained united, the Romans would have one hell of a fight under their belts.

Well if we're talking about militaries and not military leaders I don't think Alexander's army really make the cut considering they lost to the Roman army(admitedly the Romans had slightly greater numbers) with nearly the same size army at the battle of Cynoscephalae though Alexander the Greats army was probaly one of the best under his leadership. Though I agree about the Napoleonic army.

Ancient: Germans (also includes the Brits), romans.

Medieval:holy roman empire, this may not be well known but at one point the leader of the holy roman empire had control politically in england, Spain, France, and Roma.

Gun-Powder: British, French on land- Spain and England by sea.

    Industrial:England, Germany, Russia.

WW1 (i also chose this because from industrial to now a lot happens): America, (we may not have head tanks and planes, but we had 23 million men sitting idle, which doesn't include the 1 million we had in Europe), Germany, England, France, Italy, Russia.

WW2:Germany, Japan, england, US by sea- Russia, Germany, japan, US, England by land- Germany, US, Japan, England, Russia( i think) by air.

Now: US, England, Russia, China. (no need for specifics on this one)

Oh really? Guess what religion Syria is. Ya, I don't think the Catholic Crusades were to effective. He had light influence, but in reality if all the Kingdoms wanted to they could just tell him to go to Hell, and they would abandon the cause at the first sight of trouble.

So did Northern Germany. Which brings me onto my answer for this thread: Prussia. And ultimately Prussia spawned the German army. Prussian militarism might have been exploited by the Nazis, and suffered defeats at the hands of the Soviets and Napoleon, but i'd argue it produced some of the most honourable militarists (let's face it, many can be very nasty people), as well as the most determined and disciplined soldiers ever seen, as well as the best uniforms. Of course this has been repeated many times, but maybe that's because it's true.
Oh, and 'great' doesn't neccessarily mean 'good'. The self-perpetuating expansion of Ancient Rome is pretty impressive too, even if colonising lands with retired soldiers seems abhorrent.

Arguably im going with Germany, In both world wars they showed outstanding organisation and disipline. i'm not sure but i dont think there is any army that has rebuilt itslef from nothing in just 6 years. though they lost both wars they really put a dent in their enemies (French poulation after WW1 and Russain after WW2) for right or wrong the German army has been a model for most modern nations.

The united states military. The fact that America as it stands today could kick the ass of any force in all of history makes it the greatest to ever exist.
