    There's still the problem of it becoming more Greek just a hundred or two years afterwards.

    Constantinople was the second rather than the third Rome, I think, (being capital of the Eastern Roman Empire) so it shouldn't matter too much what Byzantium did with it subsequently

    Constantinople was considered (like stated above) the second Rome. They still considered themselves Roman, despite being inflienced by Greek culture. It was the other nations that called the Byzantine and Greek and well since history is determined by the victor, we know them as Byzantine and not ROman

    It was called Byzantium 'cos that was the name of the town Constantinople was built on, but don't quote me on that :)

    Well Constantine rebuilt Byzantium and named it Constantinople. it was also considered "New Rome"

    The term "Byzantine" doesnt show up till the 18th (or 19th) century. During that time, the name of thisEmpire was Imperium Romanum. It was called this way, by the Byzantines AND by all others....

    Byzantium was the Eastern Roman Empire and was designated so by Rome itself. The east formed part of the tetrarchy and its emperor retained jurisdiction over the whole empire on civil matters. Therefore when the western empire fell, it was left to the east to continue the legacy.
