The US government is the ultimate troll now.

It's called protesting. People show they are opposed, that's how they go on strike.

Except, sshutting down an internet site has no effect on industry or anything that might have a negative effect on the government. Shtriking causes millions of working days to be lost. Significant figures.

Advertisement taxes. I know JVS doesn't have much advertisement income, but all the sites together do, and if you consider the amount of tax that produces... And it also increases media attention. If the media spends much attention to it, people will too.

Yeah no. You'd be surprised the kind of damage that can be done on the Internet. In fact, not to long ago GoDaddy dropped their support of SOPA and PIPA do to users moving their domains in boycott.

Childish was a bad word. Thoughtless is better. I'm saying that this kind of 'protest' will be absolutely ineffective, and only waste time that could be spent fighting the bill more constructively. Also, Google will: they stand to lose millions, if not billions, in profit if the bill becomes law.

Again, us doing this will have zero impact on anything. A big site like Google doing it would have an effect, but this site doesn't have the member base.

Not really what we're discussing here now. According to the likes of Leon and C_G, the overall concept of any site ( I presume this would include Google.) striking is stupid, ineffective, counterproductive, ect.

Don't be naïve. Obviously a site like Google would have a massive impact. JosefVStalin.com and all of the sites who have signed on to the cockamamie scheme together can't hold a candle to what would happen of Google went on strike. We're simply too small to be of use in this type of protest. Go do something constructive if you really want to do something.

This site does not have to do anything because last I checked the site owner is Canadian and the law does not affect him. As a matter of fact the only people this actually affects is American users.

It's also motivating people. This website has hundreds of visitors each day, and notifying and motivating those people to let them hear their voice, is also effective. This one site can't do much, it's about hundreds or thousands of sites together. And plus: If many sites will join the strike, the chances of Google joining are much bigger, because that shows them the people on the internet care for it, and they will see it will also effect their image.

This is the most constructive we can do. And Google doesn't make the web, Google is only a search engine.

As far as I know it would effect all US' websites, which in the end means everyone.

Google is huge. While it doesn't make the web, it's a massively important player in the business. Not to mention it has become so much more than just a search engine.

Noone "owns" the internet in the traditional sense of the word. However, most Top-Level Domains are from the US, and most of the large sites are located there. If those would get blocked, 90% of the internet and its ad revenue will be instantly gone. Now, most providers and businesses have already said they'd go to a different country, so in the end, it'll only mean the US will undergo a brain drain and lose income.

So big companies like Google should pay millions to move for example the Googleplex to Canada?
