Other than the US I think I'd go for Israel. The only nation on the planet that still faces insurmountable odds and the threat of annihilation without support from almost any nation on the planet. A 100% win ratio in military conflict, overwhelmingly more democratic and liberal than any of its neighbors, and the only bulwark of true secularism left in the Middle East.

Historically I'd probably go with the Abbasids or the Prussians.

    Seconded.
Also, remember that inevitably, the Mongolian culture was largely sinified.

    ummmm... they didn't crumble?

Except, you know, when Rome burnt Carthage to the ground and took their holdings in Sicily and Spain, sure they didn't crumble!

Um, when your being conquered by someone stronger, yes, there are no revolts, because everyone's running before they get burnt the hell down.

Not only did the Europeans/Japanese not even try to destroy their culture, the Chinese only survived because there's like a billion of them. Come on, when you need an enemy that doesn't care and one of the largest populations on Earth to win you're nothing to be admired for.

Carthage sucked. They were barely able to kick around some small tribes and city states in the Western Mediteranian, and the first time they got an actual challenge against Rome they were owned.

They then decided to go to other places like Iberia. They could hardly win there and couldn't consolidate themselves no matter how hard they tried.

They then had to face Rome again. This time they had Hannible who were cutting across Italy. They still lost.

In other words, they barely made it up, then lost every time it matters. In fact, Rome was so annoyed with them that they destroyed the essence of Carthage's existance just to make a point.

That's a pretty big fucking deal. Tens of thousands of Romans were slaughtered by a man who crossed over the Alps with elephants.

You sir are mentally retarded. Every Battle the faced against Rome in Italy was a victory. Iberia was and still is one of the toughest parts in the world to conquer. Heck Napoleon had trouble conquering it and lost in the end. Guerilla Warfare is very hard to counter. Vietnam. Rome had a tough going against Iberia that they assassinated their leader to win. Rome in the 2nd Punic War lost more men in a few battles than the Civil War entirely. 80k 80k 60k even more after that

...And yet in all 3 Punic Wars, Carthage lost and was eventually destroyed. Yes, Hannibal crossed the Alps with his elephants, and won a lot of battles, but in the end, the Romans won. It was a good effort, but they just weren't powerful enough.
