Pompey conquered Greece, and was kicking ass in Spain, Caesar was conquering Gaul and Britannia, Mithradates of Pontus was just defeated. Then Augustus won the civil war, conquered Egypt, expanded further into Germania, they later expanded further into Dacia and Syria. I think that in and of itself is more than what the Republic conquered after the Punic Wars when it was not being overthrown by Sulla, and then replaced with a Trumvirate and another dictator.

Pompey got extremely lucky in his battles and campaigns. As soon as he met what he considered his equal Caesar, he got raped so bad.

I agree, I was just trying to make a point that most of the conquests of Rome after the Punic Wars came within this 150 year timespan.

But the regime was still a republic. In this map, we can see that the territories that the republic had conquered until it ended (in 27 B.C) were much more then the territories that were conquered during the empire. I´m sorry but I think I know what I am saying. And the military leaders were way better. During the empire, the emperors were the more famous military leaders, but they were nothing compared to the old generals of the republic.

To add to what Crocve is saying, had Julius Caesar not been assassinated, he would have restored the republic, and there never would have been an empire.

It was only a Republic at that time in name.

That's cool since the definition of republic is "not a monarchy". Are you saying the Roman Republic was under hereditary rule? If so, then you know absolutely nothing about Roman history.

I'm saying the Roman Republic was crumbling. By this time, it had already become a dictatorship at one point before returning back to a Republic, and then came under the rule of a triumvirate before coming under the rule of a "dictator for life" named Julius Caesar. And the senators at the time were corrupt idiots who did nothing in the last 100 years of the republic. My whole point is, after the Punic Wars, there were no major territorial gains under the Republic until it began to collapse.

What you don't understand is that a dictatorship is still a republic. It might not have been a democracy, but it was still a republic. And I would hardly call the Republic "crumbling" under the likes of Caesar and Sulla. You even admit that they were the ones who led Rome to expand greatly. Julius Caesar's reforms saved the republic.

There is a difference between a republic and democracy.

And as for my favorite emperor, Nero, he is just such a great leader. Who can forget the time he blamed the Christians for the fire of Rome and when he murdered his mother. What a charming young fellow

I actually saw an awesome movie about Nero once. I don't know if it was all true, but in it, he took his favourite slave, and had him made into a woman to be his partner. Now THAT is true leadership and sanity.

The senate was corrupt and incompetant, the very fact that men like sulla and marius where basically able to bend the senate to their will really points how weak the republic had become. I think is was inevitable that an empire would form at this point, mostly due the military reforms of marius which made the military loyal to their general and not the senate. The marian reforms marked the beggining of the end for the republic. The senators were weak and smallminded, not being able to look past their political careers, and thus easly cowed by a general with a strong army. Oh, and we can't say today what julius caser would have done with his newfound power, saying he would have the restored the republic is pure speculation.

The Republic itself was crumbling. Roman military might was expanding at the expense of the Republic.

My favourite Emperor would have to be either Augustus or Trajan, both were extraordinary men who made the Roman Empire greater than it had ever been before, and in Trajan's case, greater than it would ever be again.

Edit: If atleast one of the Emperors from the Nervan-Antonine dynsaty isn't in your top 5 spot... then you sicken me.

I always like Vespasian, not sure why. Maybe because of the scandal he caused because he took off his own boots in the evening and of course his famous quote: 'Petunia non olet.'
