It talks about the Moors using cannons in the 1100-1200's.

    http://www.thepirateking.com/historical/cannon_gunpowder_comes_to_europe.htm
The site won't let me copy, but it talks about Moorish use of gunpowder against Spain... in 1118.

I wouldn't blame Islam. Islam had nothing to do with this. The main reason for this was sectarianism and intervention of clergy in matters of state, policies, science.. etc. During the Islamic Golden Age ( 620 CE - 690 CE, note that I don't include the Umayyads, who just raided Byzantine libraries for knowledge) true Islamic policies were followed based off the Quran. Yet, the hadiths were the main problem and were extremely conservative scriptures written many years after Muhammad. Caliph Umar had even burnt these in order to get rid of their influence on the Islamic world. However, years later, hadiths were again followed and ultimately lead to a anti-knowledge, conservative, and radical view on the world. The Islamic Empires still conquered land due to their complete devotion to land armies, but as centuries passed the muslims lagged behind in technology eventually being beaten in years to come. Hence, the middle east is like it is today. Sorry for my horrible grammar, but I really had to write this quickly. In summary; sectarianism, reliance on hadiths, and ultraconservative clergy lead to the downfall of "Islamic" nations.

Hahaha, good twist. It's not Islam, but its the interpretation of Hadith, which are BS scripts that are not part of Islam. Islamic theology is this: Belief in 1 god, and you "reap what you sow" ( no such thing as fate).

    THATS IT!!!
Islam is the Quran, not the hadiths, or practices of Muhammad.

Don't worry. Sarcasm is quite hard to detect in writing, it requires a lot of context :p

So Islam isn't at fault, its the people that are wrongly interpreting Islam?

I thought they were always behind us, because they are either fighting each other, or simply just don't have the resources or the capability on trending with the other nations.

Well you would be wrong about the first part. For quite some time the middle east was united under the Ottomans.
