It may not take money to make digital content, but it does take man-hours. Somebody spent hours planning, designing, and producing that content, and time is money.

Yes but they're at no risk of living any worse than any of us. Hell if anything they make video games for a living, that's a lot easier than some of the stuff people have to do. Not to mention since so many other people buy the game then profit margins wont dip much at all.

Because if too many people start to download music, movies, games...etc the profitability of producing them will drop and they wouldnt be produced anymore. Off course for the things that are regularly downloaded this is not the case. For example why would someone not download a say lady gaga cd? So she could buy some more dolphins to eat? So she can get a fifth private jet?

Off course this is not the case with smaller indie games/music/movies which need their income and which are much less illegaly downloaded.

Also illegaly downloading is not theft, theft means you take something away from someone, downloading means that you copy the item in question.

Illegal downloading can thus be somewhat compared to the free-rider problem.

I agree. The smaller companies need all of the support they can get. Make sure that some of the smaller companies that make good games continue to make them.

    1. To try a game.
    2. They dont feel the game is in good enough quality for them to pay the company.
    3. Cheap.
    4. Dislike for non-open source software, thus in not wanting to support closed software but still wanting to use it, they pirate it.
    5. Limiting there role in capitalism.

Im surprised that people havent talked about the fact that DOWNLOADING isnt technically illegal, as all the pirating stuff comes under copyright law, which only covers the redistribution of software, and no the recieving of it. More to the point, i download because trying to buy games/music nowadays is next to impossible, and online there never really depreciate to the point where the really viable for me to buy, so i pirate, and happilly admit that. Before i get all this "support the company/band" stuff, i should make one thing clear. For music, unless under there own label, bands get next to nothing for album sales, it all goes to the company. Bands make there money from shows mostly, and merchandise. For games its slightly different. Because the games have technically already been sold by developer to the retailers or download sights, then they have already made there money, and dont really need to do any more. This is especialy true with things like steam, as they can just sell them the info, and this is redistributed.

With the power of the internet at my disposal? Why exactly should I pay for something I can easily gain through other means? I usually torrent crappy games like Men of War or games that I cannot easily find in a store, EG Silent Storm 2.
