Whatever you might think of Trotsky he would never surrender to the Germans and he was a better military leader that Stalin. I can't see why that would be negative in a war against Nazi Germany.(which you're obviously hinting)

The Syrian people will overtrow Assad. That's only a matter of time...

What "god like messiah" was there in Afghanistan. I could understand why you would say that about Iran, but Afghanistan had a totally different form of government.

Except the regime in Syria is doomed to fall. The money used in the war could be used to build schools, hospitals, wells, new housing and armed the rebels. This would still only cost a fraction of the price of the war.

Actually he mostly used it during the Iran-Iraq war and to be fair a lot can happen in 10 years.

I don't think it would be a fun winter soviet wonderland under Trotsky, however in the end Stalin got to power and you or any of us can not change that fact. Would he have done better, Maybe but that's a question of What if.

Yes totally. O.k its time to get this straight to people Syria is not Libya, everyone has this false illusion that Syria will fall just like Gaddafi. One of the main reasons why Gaddafi did fall was because of the lack of military support for his side, however if one looks at the Syrian revolution the military has stayed largely on Assad side and supported him (the Air-force Especially) the ones who have revolted against the regime, have had typically one thing in common. They are Sunni Muslims and are against Al Assad but a colonel revolting is not the same as the majority of your army. Which without the Army revolting or switching over to the Rebels, their is no way they have a chance to win unless they get outside help (More on that later) One can tell that in Libya the miltary was already going to switch over realtivly quickly, However In Syria this is not the case and the ones who do are killed off quickly.

Now their is more to get into and I will draw a relative comparison to what the leaders of both Libya and Syria did when the revolution broke out, In both cases they have used political force to kill protesters, however in Gaddafi's case he said that all who rebel against him our cockroaches and he will see to it that every single one of them is killed off (Advocating genocide is a big no-no) Assad has not done this and has yet to achieve the international attentions for things he has said, generally playing it off like nothing is going on.

Next one must look at the Geopolitical position of the Syrian state. One of the biggest factors against Libya was that it was geopolitical isolated from the rest of the world, and only got support from the occasional African nation. However Syria is in a great location to protect its self, If by chance the U.N approves a No fly zone and other military intervention against Syria. then Assad can call on his allies of Hamas, Hazbolla, and if push comes to shove Iran to back him up.

Next in with addition to the allies Syria has as well connect military strength, and the outside nations who do want Assad out have not done the same job they have done enforcing it like they did with Libya. Though we have asked him and his family to step down this is not enough, unless we give military support to the people of Syria the Assad family will rain for quite some time. Which we can not do because of, well the Rebels of the nation have done a horrible job organizing in the country and are all spread out unlike In Libya where they did a wonderful job organizing themselves around Benghazi which is not the case in Syria. Next their is the case of Russia which until recently had been on the side of State-Syria, Putin only switching over to an Anti-Assad stance because of the the fraud elections in Russia to draw off intention from that.

The only nation that has been doing any relative effort to bring down Syria have been France (though not as much as they did with Libya) and Turkey. Turkey has hosted the largest faction of Sunni rebels of the Syrian regime (although they have been suggestions of turning him over) though I suspect its more about securing their border and using it as an excuse to fight off any left over Islamic terrorist in the Turkey. The Kurdish question could also be involved, however as to how I can not state fully. Though Turkey could just be helping to get NATO/EU favor.

Also another factor helping Assad stay in power is that Unlike Libya, Syria does not have a economic future to be exploited in the terms of Mineral resources. Sure they have Oil but that pales in comparison to Libya.

So in the end, How would the West get rid of Assad. First there would need to be a huge military leaving (like say top top generals) as well as Political people of all kinds leaving Syria (Has happen but not in Libya scale) and the Syrian Rebels organizing themselves....which has not happen at all or has any evidence of doing so. Next the U.N would have to get alot of support for No fly zones and other measures against Syria which they have not (The majority of Syria is actually backing Assad though out of fear of what if the Rebels win). Also their would have to be a guarnetee that the western Imperialism in Syria would not spill over to Iraq or worse lead to Hamas attacks on Israel or Iran blocking the straight of Homez.

If push comes to shove, Assad will stance strong and will last alot longer then Gaddafi did....if not stay in power for the entirety. Also He can always unfie the country again with their hatred of Israel.

Also does Nato even want another "War?" Propley not. Syria is not Libya, Assad will stay because of all the above reasons.

There is more information I have yet to discuss but I'm short on time and I highly recommend you look in on it.
